Bank accounts may be considered
dormant and unclaimed when the owner fails to make a deposit or withdrawal
over a one year period, or when a bank statement or other official
correspondence is returned by the post office as undeliverable.
This often occurs upon the death of a family member, a name change after marriage or divorce, the expiration of a mail forwarding order after a move, or as a result of a computer or clerical error. Note: allowing a bank certificate of deposit (CD) to automatically roll-over may also result in an account being classified as unclaimed. Did you or a family member have unclaimed money at a bank that moved, changed its name or closed its doors? Don't assume that because your bank, savings and loan or credit union no longer exists that missing funds are lost forever. The account may have been transferred to a successor bank or a government custodian after a merger or acquisition. Even if a bank failed and closed its doors, under the terms of the Financial Institutions Reform Recovery & Enforcement Act, you may still be entitled to collect deposit insurance proceeds - up to $100,000 per account - from government regulators. Unclaimed money may be recovered after years of inactivity, even if a passbook is lost or destroyed, but you should act promptly.
